Lipids are vital biological molecules and play multiple roles in cellular function of mammalian organisms such as cellular membrane anchoring, signal transduction, material trafficking and energy storage. Driven by the biological significance of lipids, lipidomics has become an emerging science in the field of omics. Lipidomics is the large-scale profiling and quantification of biogenic lipid molecules and involves comprehensively studying lipid pathways and interpreting their physiological significance based on analytical chemistry and statistical analysis. The study of lipidomics has displayed great potential in different fields related to disease, drug R&D, food and plant. Thanks to the great innovations in chromatographic separation techniques and the continuous advances in mass spectrometric detection tools, lipidomics have been greatly development in recent years [1]. Alfa Chemistry's Workflow
The analysis procedures for lipidomics in Alfa Chemistry consist of following five steps of biological sample collection and lipid extraction, sample pretreatment, MS data acquisition, post-acquisition data processing and physiological significance clarification [2]. Alfa Chemistry's Services
The lipidomics services in Alfa Chemistry can be divided into following four subfields, namely, untargeted lipidomics, targeted lipidomics, exosome lipidomics and lipidomics MALDI imaging.
- Untargeted lipidomics. Untargeted lipidomics or so-called global lipidomics, aims to identify and quantify all lipids in a system, which is suitable for obtain an overview of lipid molecules in a system.
- Targeted lipidomics. Targeted lipidomics focuses on characterization of specific lipids, which is might be more applicable to solving specific and complex biological problems.
- Pseudotargeted lipidomics. Pseudotargeted lipidomics integrates the untargeted and targeted lipidomics strategies, which shows satisfactory analytical characteristics in terms of linearity, precision, reproducibility, and recovery.
- MALDI-IMS lipidomics. MALDI-IMS is used to study the distribution of lipids in tissues and can be used to image a large number of different types of endogenous lipids.
